Our Love is a Castle: A True Story

My husband and I were best friends for almost four years before we decided it was time to stop being silly and start being in love.

When the recession hit we were just beginning our relationship and there was limit funding for date nights, so we decided to hit the parks. Our first true “date” was Squire’s Castle, a shell of a building located deep in the North Chagrin Reservation MetroPark. Squire’s Castle is not actually a castle and was never meant to be so. It was intended to be a guard house to a more elaborate building, but it was never finished. Indeed, the owner Feargus B. Squire did live in it for a time, but eventually abandoned the land and sold it in 1922. By 1925 the Cleveland MetroParks purchased the land and it has become a public site ever since.

On a good day in Cleveland children play in the castle, people walk their dogs and couples young and old will enjoy its splendor.

Last June, my husband and I added it to our story once more as we said our “I dos” in front of a small gathering of our friends and family within its walls and our love has been a castle ever since.

  1. May it remain a fairy tale castle forever in memory and in what it started!
